We’re in Ghana’s Brong-Ahafo Region this week for more One Day Workshops in three of Techiman’s outlying villages.
Asueyi, Akonkonti and Tinebea will host 6 days of workshops and deliver 120 bicycles, 50 of which will include our made-in-Ghana carriers.
All three villages are largely famring communities, who grow cash crops which they then sell in nearby Techiman – Ghana’s oldest market town, and one of West Africa’s largest trade hubs.
Participants told us that a 2-3 three hour roundtrip between their home and farm was not uncommon, and that some had multiple farms many kilometres apart. There is no public transport, and instead they need to rely on costly motorbike rentals, or simply carry their goods to the nearest station-town, up to 17km away.
In Tinebea, the last village in our program, students told us that they walk 12km each day to the nearest schooll. They said their teachers complained when they were late, and some would fall asleep in class from exhaustion.
Each participant will attend a one-day workshop in basic bicycle repair and maintenance, before purchasining their bicycle at a subsidised cost.
Many of the bicycles in this program have come from our friends at Working Bikes in Chicago, and we’re confident they’re going to make a huge difference to the lives of their new owners!
